Keerthy Suresh Wins Best Actress National Film Award for ‘Mahanati’

Keerthy Suresh has bagged the 66th National Award for her performance in the biopic Mahanati. The actress effectively portrayed the role of the iconic actress Savitri. The National Film Awards 2019 were announced today.

While Ayushmann Khurrana and Vicky Kaushal emerged as winners in the Best Actor category for their films AndhaDhun and Uri: The Surgical Strike, Keerthy Suresh won the Best Actress Award for her performance in Mahanati.  As soon as the announcement was made, the 26-year-old South Indian actress was hailed by Twitterati from all quarters.

Mahanati was released on May 9 last year. Directed by Nag Ashwin, the film is a biographical movie, following the life of late Tamil and Telugu actress Savitri. Also starring Samantha Akkineni, Dulquer Salmaan and Vijay Deverakonda, Mahanati was bankrolled by C. Ashwini Dutt, Swapna Dutt and Priyanka Dutt under the banners Vyjayanthi Movies and Swapna Cinema.

It was a bilingual release, made simultaneously in Telugu and Tamil with the latter titled Nadigaiyar Thilagam. While Samantha played the role of a journalist in the movie, Dulquer plays Keerthy’s husband Gemini Ganesan and Vijay Deverakonda played a photographer.

At the 2018 Indian Film Festival of Melbourne last year, the film received the Equality in Cinema Award. At the time of release, the film had opened up to positive reviews from the critics as well as the audience. Keerthy Suresh’s performance was praised in particular. In its 50-day run at the box office, Mahanati had breached past the Rs 75 crore mark internationally.

Keerthy Suresh, daughter of former actress Menaka and director Suresh Kumar, made her acting debut as a child artist. She entered the Telugu film industry as a heroine with the film Nenu Shailaja.

She went on to act in big-budget commercial entertainers in both Tamil and Telugu film industries. Keerthy is known for her films Remo, Bairavaa, Thodari, Agnyaathavaasi and Thaana Serndha Kootam.

She has played an extended cameo in Nagarujna’s Manmadhadu 2, which has hit the screens today. Keerthy is reportedly looking to make her debut in Hindi and has not signed any new films in Tamil or Telugu industry.
